The Problem with Celebrity Pastors

Even having a “celebrity pastor” speak/preach to celebrities is still fake on a level. To me, you as the “celebrity pastor”, are preaching to the celebrity of a human being more than the person underneath that mask. Celebrities need authentic, real, unknown pastors that aren’t on TV to connect with them. For that pastor to speak to the human being, not the mask of the celebrity. If that makes sense

The Mickey Mouse club kids actually did pretty well with becoming famous young. I.e. Timberlake , Ryan gosling and Britney Spears even though she went through a breakdowns she made it to the other side . Jodie foster, drew Barrymore after she got sober so young . People only focus on the train wrecks and tragedies but reality is a lot of people famous as kids had it pretty good, they grew up making a lot of money by themselves and never wanted for anything. I have a lot more sympathy for the millions of kids living in poverty homeless starving sex trafficked child laborers abused etc . Famous kids have suffered too but honestly their problems are all first world and self inflicted. That isn’t to say that I don’t have sympathy for the child actors/ musicians who were exploited and abused but I would much rather be depressed, abused, addicted to drugs with millions of dollars in the bank and extensive resources than without a penny or a way out .

People need to realize that EVERY human makes mistakes. Doesn’t matter if they’re Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, atheist, etc. People tend to always put religious people on a pedestal thinking they can do no wrong.

As a Christian pastor, I know Joe is right that you have to be inocculated against the desire and appeal of celebrity. Teaching the Bible without compromise does that really well. Celebrity pastors are not "us", they are "them", they are more celebrity than pastor.

As a young skinny jean wearing pastor, I can personally say the way someone dresses isn't an indicator of whether or not someone is "actually a pastor". Pastors are people too and there's been plenty of "suit and ties" who have made similar mistakes as Carl Lentz. This is about character and integrity, so I don't get the whole argument about clothing and whatnot.

I've always felt that whether a Pastor caters to celebrities or leads churches big enough to be a flying televangelist, their failure as preachers start when they become too politically correct and change the narrative of what the Bible was supposed to teach just so that they won't offend their target crowd just like on polarizing issues like sexual immorality or how much to give when supporting a church financially. Of course the Bible teaches about grace and forgiveness, but being exposed makes life harder for these Pastors because suddenly everyone thinks they're no different from talk show hosts or pro wrestlers when they've tasted a bit of fame.
