The Ethical Responsibilities of Tech Companies

Agreed, I don't see what business tech companies have in enforcing ethics if they are trying to get people hooked to their platform like drugs.

Are you talking about the same Joe Rogan who recently was caught in his underwear talking to Elon Musk (again) and accidentally showing us he had never ever even LOOKED at SpaceX in his lifetime? "Ooooh! These rockets can land? That is soo cool" I thought that Musk mentally collapsed for a few seconds as he realized the very same thing. Time to drastically lower expectations, I guess.

I wouldn't know half the shit I know today without the internet, I have learned many subjects from politics, science/math, computer engineering/programming (my career choice anyways so I had to look up information on hardware and software), etc. And media and books have been known for passing misinformation way before the internet. I have nothing against reading books, they are often are best for quality information and/or interesting stories that are told. The problem is people (as well as government and corporate entities trying to control people for their selfish ends but they are runed by people too), too many people can't handle the internet these days and really should just leave it to those who can mentally/emotionally handle it.

@Rui exactly the reason why im studing privacy law, i want to get to the bottom of this, its mind boggling the things they can do with ur info and the data they collect... its madness like when u make an instagram account with a gmail thats also used for ur facebook they will crossreference it and send messages to ur facebook friends saying hey this person with ur full name displayed made an instagram account under the name (blank) its fucking baffling

@daboy dudus I think governments will eventually see that they can't allow tech to collect such data and make laws about that. Furthermore, this apps are more Behavioral Modification than social networks. I don't know why posting something or sharing something over a platform is considered "social"... You can do that and still have no friends.

i think moving forward thats whats going to happen u saw it before the mark zuckerberg hearing companies did everything and nobody stopped them, but then after that laws have been put in place where they cant have ur data for more than 2 years and such

I don't really follow because online I can find multiple different perspectives on technology, politics, just about any subject. With just two parents, your perspective and window of the world is a lot smaller which means your more likely to conform if your more sheltered (of course the internet isn't the only way of seeing the world, there is always the option of traveling and exploring if one can afford it and is ready to). Regardless, I think kids should be spending time with their parents anyways and not worry about that crap too much and probably shouldn't even use the internet without parental guidance and certainly shouldn't use it too often. But I don't think kids fail to think independently just because of the internet.

they don't sell your info, it's not in their best interest. They use your data to make predictive models that get better and better at keeping you on the app

Pretty much, there are plenty of good games even still being made to this day but they don't get advertised like some of the overpriced, overvalued trash games do.

Just plan to not go on RSborder when you have work or other things going on... I'm kinda addicted to RSborder too... 😅 But then, I also have some sort of control over my addiction though... 😅

an then you add engagement optimized matchmaking... then the facet of skill you put into the game gets overided by what you are ALLOWED to accomplish in game... Having difficulty adjust mid-game to promote continued use is HORSESHIT. And it becomes an ethical question when you advertise "ranked" gameplay.

Nah ownership is important but the companies need to held accountable as well.

Exactly. What's easier? Making huge companies have ethics and do the right thing or take personal responsibility for just yourself and not play video games/go on social media? People are fighting a battle they won't win.

Yup, almost every major game is now made by the committee, politically correct and sanitized, barely any innovation, if it has shiny graphics and cinematic cutscenes then mainstream critics and normies shovel it with 9's and 10's, almost every open world game feels the same and copy the tired as hell Ubisoft formula, most linear games try to be more like hand holded interactive Hollywood movies than actual games that focus on player agency.

@TheDrewSaga It's my belief that corruption is inevitable, and can only be mitigated. Say you are somehow able to find a set of lawmakers that are completely incorruptible and make perfect laws and never abuse their power. How do you guarantee that in a generation or two they aren't replaced by corrupt ones? Ones that use the now-fully regulated market for their own gains? Voters can be mislead into electing such corrupt officials. That's why people tend to be adverse to a fully government controlled market -- because the government can end up being just as self serving. EDIT: For analogy, just view the governments as big companies that happens to have voter-elected CEOs. When you make that comparison, it becomes immediately clear why people don't want too much government regulation.

@Woodside That's a very good question considering how deep political corruption runs in this country. It would have to be a government entity that regulates them but if they are already too corrupt then I don't know if there is any real way of properly regulating them.

On the other hand, how do we regulate? The last people we would ever want responsible for the regulation would be the ones writing the rules.
