The Next Steps of Immersive Gaming

Fuck VR dude. Everything about reality gaming is degrading creative gaming and that's a big problem because creativity on its own is dying. You know, when you get more and more realistic, it makes it harder for unrealistic stuff to make it on the higher performance models and let alone sell. You have to wait longer for a product to be released and businesses have to put in just that much more effort and money into a 1 time product that may or may not succeed. We NEED to bring PS2 standards era back to gaming because it was not just booming because of it's low poly count but because you could create a much more enjoyable game though imagination rather than through restrictions from reality. Why else do you think such games from the Nintendo produce and sell like wild fire compared to higher poly consoles?

I want to see Joe play SoundSelf. It's a VR "game" that consists entirely of using meditation and chanting to interact with psychedelic visuals. Honestly, I've thought of investing in a new computer and a headset purely to get that game.

I think one of the negative effect of virtual reality when it becomes mainstream and cheap is malnutrition especially for those people living in poor parts of the world. Imagine having access to a virtual reality hardware like how cheap renting a computer in an internet cafe but having not enough money to buy food. Virtual reality could be the new opium for the needy.

The more immersive video games get, the more immersed people with lower levels of imaginations are becoming. People with highly advanced imaginations were being immersed this much by NES. For others they need VR to get that immersed. If you are worried how addicted people will get, just look at NES of the past. That's what happens. The people that were playing NES in the 80s were very often being highly immersed. It's not that bad.

As someone who has played an extensive amount of VR, I don't care for the fact that this fellow makes it sound as though VR is a mcguffin that traps people into not wanting to eat, or shower, etc etc etc. Anyone who has played VR for extensive periods will tell you that even if you WANT to play for that long, it's a bit overwhelming and overstimulating to the point where most people play for a couple of hours, max, and then take off the headset because you need a break. Either mind from over stimulation or eyes from some measure of strain, usually. The tired narrative that video games turn people into mindless idiots that can't tear themselves away from them or lose some sort of control over their faculties is absurd & think this particular person is not someone that should be sought out as an authority on the subject. Frankly, mobile gaming on phones is more addictive than the average console, PC, or Virtual Reality game, literally, by design. Not only has VR been a wonderful way to "get away" in short bursts during Covid when we can't really go anywhere, it also has MASSIVE untapped potential as a utility (imagine teaching auto shop students how to take cars apart in VR with no need for physical parts or risk of injury, or plumbers & electricians being taught how to work their trade with virtual assets). We're lucky to have such a technology available to us.

Gaming will never go VR mainstream. If anything it will be a fad like Wii / connect / play.

5:11 I think the phone addiction is bit overrated. There has been nothing in human history that has persisted the test of time. What we should really be worried about is people moving away for questioning nature and accepting what they told. This does not apply to every, but it does majority of people. There are small minority, who naturally possess a question nature, that has thrived due to easy of information sharing. Majority of the other people have not benefited from immense information that is available to us.

I use my Playstation VR for my cardio (as well as the majority of my gaming). Knockout League and Sprint Vector are fantastic games for that. Still have to go to the gym for strength training though (not sure how you could do that in VR).

Well I see what Joe is saying here but as someone that has had a VR headset for more than a year now: The initial immersion of VR is extremely high and addictive but after a week of extremely heavy usage I kinda started to experience it more like normal gaming with extra dimensions. Some experiences like social vr have replaced going out in real life however since I can't really go out with this lockdown and I gotta say that is actually starting to feel like an experience I don't wanna go without anymore.

In the future couldn’t we use these virtual experiences to train; athletes, special forces, firefighters etc? It’s addicting but you could also train boxing without any head trauma at young ages etc, AI is already better at humans than chess. You could use (eventually when graphics catch up in VR) matrix like training sessions. You could fix any problem on a car or machine, you could learn to race without actually crashing... learn to pilot a plane without actually using one. I think above video games it has serious beneficiaries

Sounds Like the movie “ready player one”

I love games. But....they have gotten way too immersive. People need to stop spending literally days worth of gaming. Take ghost recon for example. The amount of things to do in this game is huge. That's good, because you can avoid having to buy new expensive titles every month. Game companies don't want that. They want you to be addicted to playing, so you chew through massive titles, and then need to buy more. Like crack. It's ultimately the players that need to regulate themselves, and not feel the need to just rip through a title. Adding vr to the mix is just going to create more addicted gamers.

We just want Dying Light to come out already ...

We should ban gaming and make kids work in the field. Pick fruit and vegetables. Bend and scoop.

I feel like virtual reality is not ready for me yet(or the other way around). I feel like i wont be satisfied until its completely immersive VR (like in the anime Sword Art Online, btw they're re-doing the first part in a movie from asuna's perspective).

As good as vr is it wont last because it makes you go blind early ,the end.

I'm really looking forward to trying anything VR especially Half-Life Alyx and like the whole Ready Player One scenario and hooked into Oasis. Just like what was first said about not playing Warcraft because of addiction danger and end up spending years playing the game, me to to that I was a terrible gaming nut, now I hear that it's very healthy playing them, especially the ones where you have to move your arms & legs. Games are fantastic we all need fantasy and excitement in our lives and just like a good book or Netflix series it's all about the story and what we may learn from it.
